Managing & Scheduling Molecular Models

The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Model Lending Library has a unique collection of physical models and materials designed to assist in molecular learning. The library makes these models available for short-term loan, to science educators across the country for use in K-12 and college classrooms, and other outreach activities. These models are produced by the Center for Biomoleular Modeling and 3D Molecular Designs using 3D Printing Technology.

There are 70+ model kits covering 22 different areas of molecular science included in the collection. The lending library has been in operation since 2003 and had previously managed the scheduling with an internal spreadsheet. This process required staff mediation and time to communicate the availability of the models to the borrower. The LibCal Equipment Module has made it possible for users to view the schedule, make their request, and receive confirmation of their loan immediately -- eliminating the need for staff coordination and vastly reducing the time previously associated with scheduling. Additionally, the module has streamlined the workflow associated with managing this collection.
