Using LibGuides & LibAnswers for Communication and Collaboration
The Center@Midway for Teaching Excellence and Innovation is housed in the Little Memorial Library at Midway University and is staffed by personnel that double as librarians and instructional technologists/designers. The Center promotes ongoing academic program enhancement and faculty development by applying research-based principles of pedagogy, instructional design, and integration of technology to encourage active student engagement and deep learning. The Center was established in early 2015 and quickly found itself in need of an efficient way to communicate with faculty and students regarding their immediate and future needs. We turned to LibGuides and LibAnswers. We embedded the LibAnswers question form widget into the Center's website as the "Contact Us" page. Using this widget, students, faculty and staff now have one point of contact for all their questions. Questions originating from the question form widget go to the Center's email account, which all Center staff can access. This means no student, faculty or staff question gets lost while individual staff members are out of office. Moreover, Center staff can use the LibAnswers dashboard to see current questions, mark them as pending, add information, track communications and collaborate on solutions. And we can use the Dashboard to create FAQ and to track statistics related to the questions/issues resolved by Center staff. Finally, we use LibGuides created by staff to house 'how to' documents and videos, pedagogy instruction, recordings of our Faculty Development Institute presentations, and to host the Center blog. By using all these resources, we have created a wealth of easily accessible, well organized, easily editable/update-able information for the students and faculty at Midway University. We can also provide data to the university administration documenting the value of the Center.
