Onboarding with LibGuides
These onboarding tutorials comprise the required onboarding components for student workers, paraprofessionals, and professional library staff on library services topics such as cataloging procedures, circulation procedures, serials procedures, WorkFlows (Library Management System) procedures, opening/closing duties, in addition to other library policies and procedures. These onboarding modules serve to provide training across departments, as computer lab assistants, Information Technology assistants, and senior IT administrators complete these modules since they offer related services in the Knowledge Commons within the Library & Learning Center.
The first iteration of the online tutorials utilized LibGuides pages with boxes and static content to communicate critical library information to staff (i.e. step-by-step directions, task lists, etc...). The second iteration was designed to promote staff interaction and engagement with the content by embedding interactive modules within LibGuide v2 pages with Office Mix, a free plugin to Microsoft PowerPoint. This presentation will illustrate the experiences the Directors of the Library and Learning Center and the Office of Institutional Research & Training had redesigning the original LibGuides v2 modules from static content to rich interactive media tutorials, share best practices learned from deploying the new modules with library and IT workers, and summarize analytic feedback from the online modules including time spent in training as well as pre- and post-training knowledge assessment results.
