Real-World Readiness: Using LibGuides to Wade Through the COVID-19 Flood

Medical librarians at the Welch Medical Library maintain a collection of LibGuides focused on serving the needs of the campus and global community. As the COVID-19 pandemic arose, the public was faced with an overload of information and misleading reports. Librarians at the Welch Medical Library quickly assembled a LibGuide to meet the needs of Hopkins researchers and healthcare workers.  Resources were curated according to research resources, point-of-care resources, disease tracking/epidemiology, internal/Hopkins specific resources, and consumer health resources. Resources were chosen based on timeliness, authority, and usefulness to researchers or frontline healthcare workers.

Empowering Staff and Facilitating Remote Work with LibAnswers

Prior to COVID-19, the Dartmouth College Biomedical Libraries had all staff -- not just librarians -- using LibAnswers for reference questions, information services interactions, and data collection. During the shift to remote work, this system was refined to facilitate our information services staff (whose job is mainly based on site, at the desk) working from home and increase their responsibilities for virtual patron interactions. Staff have received ample training in LibAnswers and in basic reference skills, and librarians now only respond to tickets or chats if they are transferred one by a staff member. Staff are trusted and empowered to utilize and expand upon their own knowledge, patrons receive responses faster, and librarians have time to dedicate to research and literature searching needs.

Rachel Valentine, Blinn College Library

Using LibGuides and LibWizard to create Online Escape Rooms

Generation Z has come to college and they are a different type of learner from Millennials and GenX.  Come learn about one way to engage them with library resources: Rachel will demonstrate how she used LibWizard and LibGuides to create online escape rooms.

Susanna Smith & Camille Pace, Georgia Highlands College

LibAnswers as a Life Preserver: STEM411 at Georgia Highlands College

After receiving a grant, GHC STEM faculty wanted to develop an online portal where students could receive help from faculty outside of formal office hours. Several casual conversations later, the library got involved and STEM411 became a reality. Using LibAnswers and LibGuides, it provides asynchronous and real-time support for numerous STEM courses. Drawing on faculty expertise, students can ask course-related questions and receive specialized instruction and guidance through LibAnswers. LibGuides houses the course content, including instructional videos and online course materials. Both platforms help provide the life preserver many students need to be successful!
